The year 1785 was a crucial one for the Millers. They had been farming the Elklick property for ten years. John Jr., Jacob, and Peter were looking for more permanent homesteads of their own. Barbara was married and living near Meyersdale. As it turned out, the three older brothers all found farms in Elklick or Summit Townships. The father had an offer to sell his Elklick farm to Peter Livengood, whose oldest son was not married. Christian was the oldest son not yet settled and perhaps already working on the Glades property.

The father decided to sell and move to the Glades [from Elklick]. The warrant had not been properly issued so a new survey and a new proper warrant was issued first to the father, and then in the name of Christian. [Thus, Christian had a stake in the Glades property.]
