Facts and Events
(Research):Research on 29 Nov 2006 provided the following results: Using the family history center, the following things were determined: 1. That Chauncey was very likely the son of one of two men in Erie County, New York, either Elisha or Myron Newell. a. Examinations census records for Myron and Elisha Newell between 1850-1880. 1. 1880 census Myron Newell The 1880 census shows that the household of Myron contains: Myron W M 82 head farmer born New York, father born Connecticut, mother born in Connecticut Amelia W F 82 wife keeping house, Connecticut, Conencticut, Connecticut George W W M 50 farmer NY NY CT Susan J. W F 44 daughter-in-law boarder NY NY NY Elisha Newell The 1880 census shows that the household of Elisha contains:
1. 1840 census Elisha Newell The 1840 census does not contain an Elisha as the probability of his name comes into existence in an earlier record. The 1840 census shows an Asha Newell in Erie County, New York whose household has one male child aged 10-15, which would fit Chauncey, assuming that he was born at around 1828 but not before 1825. Asha is not found in the 1840 census and is presumed to be another name for Elisha. The listing shows 0-1-1-2-0-0-1x 0-1-0-2-1-0-1. Milan Newell A Milan Newell is listed in the 1840 census but does not have a male child in the 10-15 year range and therefore is not deemed a possibility of being the father of Chauncey. As the birth year of Chauncey is given --in the records presently known about-- as either 1827 or 1828, and as that is not a border year where he might be deemed as under 10 and over 15 years old, it seems unlikely that he would be placed in one of those columns. The entry for Milan shows 1-1-0-1-0-0-1x 0-0-1-1-1-0-1. --> Above the entry for Milan Newell, there is a James W. Kester. 2. 1830 census Myron Newell Myron Newell is listed in the 1830 census as 0-1-0-0-0-1x 1-1-0-0-1. As Chauncey would have been about 2 years old in 1830, this entry indicates that Myron is not a possibility for being the father of Chauncey as there are no male children listed in the 0-5 years column. Elisha Newell Elisha Newell is listed in the 1830 census as 2-0-1-0-0-1x 1-1-1-0-0-1. Chauncey could very well have been one of the two male children that were aged 0-5 years in the 1830 census. -->Note: Myron and Elisha Newell are located on the same page and are separated by a Samuel Peak. This suggests a possible connection between these two men. >Note: Joseph Shotwell is listed near the top of the page, but near the Newells. 3. 1820 census Myron Newell Myron Newell is listed as 0-0-0-1-0-0x 0-0-1. This suggests that Myron is aged 16-26 years old and that he is married to a 16-26 year old woman. Elisha Newell Elisha Newell is listed as 1-0-0-1-0-0x 1-1-1. The 1820 census indicates that Elisha was between 16 and 26 years old and married a woman of the same age group. --> Note: Myron and Elisha are shown to be neighbors, living next to Joseph Shotwell. 4. 1810 census I or S Newell There are an I and an S Newell listed in the 1810 census that are possible candidates for the father of Myron and Elisha (assuming that they are in fact brothers). This matter will have to be pursued once the father of Chauncey is determined.
5. Myron and Elisha Newell and the possibility of them being brothers 1. They lived near each other in the 1830 & 1820 censuses. 2. They lived near Joseph Shotwell.
The case number was 16282. Land record notes: Based on information gathered from the 1860-1954 Tract Books Index, Chauncey was neighbors with Gideon Lupton. 1905 Kansas state census note: There is a Robert Newell, age 13, listed in Linlee's house. Land in Iowa: Newell, C. 25 65 Cedar 86 North 11 West Newell, C. 20 25 Harrison 86 North 10 West Lupton, W.C. 24 80 Cedar 86 North 11 West Kester, L. 26 80 Cedar 86 North 11 West
