Facts and Events
Kenneth George Western writes in a January 2001 "[Charles Lewis Western] came from Essex. I knew only Charles from that branch. He appeared mysteriously at our home when I was young. Charles was doing a spot of freelance music school-mastering in nearby Hornsey, and with commendable Western prudence didn't see why he should spend money on hotel bills when we were within a few bars short of a symphony from the school. Charles lived then in Prittlewell (the posh part of Southend), and was a organist in Southend-on-sea, and music director of the Billericay Choral and Operatic Society in Essex. Very wisely he married the daughter of a local farmer [Winfred Fisher]. Later they moved to Mill Hill where Charles became music master at Hendon Grammar School. Charles worked on a freelance basis for television - ITV I believe - and he had a hand, more probably two, in the English National Opera in London."
•A full-scale opera production, “The Tenor”, with Charles Western and Lorill Drummond will highlight the festival, March 10 – 12"
