Born in Warriors Mark, PA. When he was two years old both his parents passed away. He was taken in by family friends, Parker and Alice Washburns. The Washburns then moved with Charles to Morrisdale, PA. The Washburns bought a house that was later owned by Harold Whipple and ran a restaurant out of that house. He went to work in the coal mines when he was nine years old.

He fought in the Spanish American War. He had a glass eye, that he lost while working as a farrier for the mines (possibly from a hot poker or tongs). Due to his lost eye he did not drive a car. He was a post master in the Morrisdale post office. Later he was the manager of the Morrisdale company store for the mines. He was a religious man, but did not attend the local church.

He enjoyed sneaking over to the "Beer Garden" from time to time when Melvina wasn't looking. In his later years he would sit in a chair by the window and do crossword puzzles, his grand children would sometimes ask him to pop his glass eye out. He chewed Red Man chewing tobacco all the time. He always wore a three piece suit regardless of the weather.

The day he died he got up and dressed in his suit, had breakfast, sat down on the couch. Then said to Melvina "I hope you can take care of yourself.", laid back and died.
