Facts and Events
The Shrewsbury 1855 census shows young Charles, age 3, living with his grandparents Ethan and Catherine Temple. His father William, age 40, is living in a household with 23 other people. There is no mention of his mother Nancy at either house, so I assume she's died. In the Worcester directories, they have a Charles W. starting in about 1875 listed as living in a house at 35 Queen St. and working at Bushnell, Wellington & Co., a press manufacturer. In 1877, he's still at the press manufacturer, but has moved to Valley. In 1878, he is listed as a blacksmith for Worcester Boiler Works. In the 1880 census, Charles W., age 28, Alice (Dickman, wife of Charles) age 29, Willie R. age 7, and Florence L. age 5 are living are living in Boylston with Charles and his father William. Both list their occupations as "Farmer". In 1885 he is listed as a farmer living at Stafford, north of Heard. William , the elder is also listed, same address, even though he died in 1884. In 1886, Charles is still listed as a farmer, boarding at Fowler and they reference that William the elder died December 24, 1884 at age 71. From thereon, he's gone, and we start to see listings for only for Mrs. Alice Wellington. In the 1880 census, Alice is living on Lake in Worcester with Florence, Lester and a John Hacket, who is her age and listed as a boarder. Lester was born in 1886, the same year that we last see his father listed. |
