According to Mary Florence Ayers' Family Notes, he and his brother William went to California for the 1849 Gold Rush, married and settled there, as did their brother George after the Civil War.

Arrived in San Francisco 18 October 1850 aboard the steamer Oregon from Panama.via Acapulco and San Diego. This vessel brought the news of California's admission into the Union.
