In Penobscot at 1860 census with real estate valued at $900 and personal estate valued at $400. Living in Penobscot at 1870 census with real estate valued at $500 and personal estate value of $150. In Penobscot at 1880 Census. In 1860, there is a John L. age 25 with the family of Charles and Mary Wardwell. Later on the same page, there is a John Wardwell, head of household. This second Wardwell is age 26, brickmaker, with a Phebe R., age 23 and Wilbur M. age 2. Living with son John in Penobscot at 1900 Census. 1906 Penobscot census lists his date of birth. "Capt. Charles Wardwell of Penobscot, age 98, claims to be the oldest Democrat in Maine to vote in the recent election." -Daily Kennebec Journal 29 September 1906 "Capt. Charles Wardwell, the oldest resident of Penobscot, died suddenly April 30. He was in his 99th year and had been in exceptionally good health. Capt. Wardwell, known to everyone as "Cap'n Charles" followed the sea as a coasting skipper for over 50 years, retiring about 30 years ago. He was a native of Penobscot, and survived his wife about 14 years. Of the five children , all are living, and there are eight grandchildren." -Daily Kennebec Journal 02 May 1907 References
