from Cecile to Norma Strang Larsen.
The only ones of the Ohio people to come to visit their Michigan cousins, to my knowledge, were the Charles Wack family and I remember those occasions. Charles came when my grandfather, Jacob, died and in the evening after the day of the funeral, the family including me, sat in the home visiting.
Charles claimed to be a ‘spiritualist' and he went into a trance and then named all of the dead relatives who were there in the room with us. It frightened me so that for a long time I wouldn't let go of my Mother's skirts going into a dark room.
One other time, later on, the same Charles Wack, his wife and one of his two daughters, came to Quincy again and stayed overnight at our home. Previously, my Mother had told me that the daughter, Gertrude, was a graduate from Ohio State University, so I (page 3) assumed that she must be a very, very, much of a walking encyclopedia, I was then about 12 or 14 years or so old, I guess. So when they came, I soon proceeded to get the dictionary, pick out difficult words, and ask her the meaning of them in order to put her to the test. In the midst of her struggle, my Mother appeared on the scene and, seeing what was going on, immediately ordered me to cease my torment, much to her embarrassment. Charles Wack was a barber in Elyria, Ohio.
