Bio: Civil War Union Brigadier General. Graduated from the USMA in 1815 at age 16, and served during the War of 1812 as an engineer on Governors Island, New York City. Remained in the Army after the war, rising to Captain in the Artillery branch, and fought in the Seminole Wars of the 1830s. He resigned from the Army in 1836 to become a farmer in Maryland. When the Civil War broke out, he was serving as Mayor of Cumberland, Maryland, which was a critical railroad hub. He was appointed as a Brigadier General, US Volunteers on September 7, 1861 to give him military authority to protect the rail lines. In this task, he was largely unsuccessful in keeping Confederate raids from periodically destroying the tracks. He resigned his commission in April 1862 to allow a younger commander to take up the protective mission. He was the son of Kentucky US Senator Buckner Thruston.
