In 1892 Charles was working in his father's store.  He attendedAmherst College in MA after graduating from Elba. While there hebecame a member of the Glee Club and toured Europe in 1894.  Hebecame a close friend of Calvin Coolidge who would later becomePresident of the United States.  Graduating in June 1896 after his 4years of study, he took a position as assistant Principal in theOneonta State Normal School.  In 1899 he went to Cadillac, MI tobecome the bookkeeper for the Staples & Sons lumber firm.  In 1916 hewas on the Progressive ticket as a candidate for the nomination ofLieutenant Governor.  In 1923 he worked in the law offices of  thefirm of Mitchel & Staples in the Prudential building in Buffalo, NY.In 1905 he was living in Buffalo.
