Charles was born in Schoenberg, Mecklenburg, Germany and immigrated to the U.S. where he met and married Eliza Zartman on February 12, 1857 in Jamestown, Ohio. To them were born three children: 1: Wilmot Oren, 2: Henry Charles, 3: Ella Grace. Charles was killed June 5, 1864 in the Battle of Piedmont, Virginia serving with the 28th O.V.I. Co. G and is interred at Staunton National Cemetery in Staunton, Virginia in one of the 518 graves marked unknown. Charles was a Sergeant with Co. G and his Civil War Certificate of Honor lists his height 5 feet 7 inches, light complextion, blue eyes, sandy hair and by occupation a butcher. The 28th O.V.I. "Ohio Volunteer Infantry" was an all German regiment frequently referred to as the "2nd German Ohio Regiment".
