While employed at the Ohio Falls Iron Works rolling mill, Charlie's job was to grip the white hot rods (bars of steel) with a pair of tongs and drag it out of the rolls. When he was about 14, one of the pieces curled up and pressed against the calf of his leg. There is a picture of this injury, but WHERE?!!! According to him, the leg didn't heal and he thought that he would be crippled for life. One icy day, while walking on the sidewalk, he slipped on some ice. When his leg slammed on the ice, the wound reopened, steel shards poured out. The leg then healed. He was the owner/operator of the Pedley Butane Gas Company. He was a Mason.
