Charles Oates is believed to have been born in Yorkshire, near Doncaster, England (Source: Convict record sheet). There is no confirmation for the date of birth but it is close to 1822 from the age given at marriage as recorded in the Tas Pioneers Index. Now believed to be 2 March 1823, Marshgate, Yorkshire, England. Charles Oates was transported to Van Diemen's Land on the ship ANSON arriving on 4 Feb 1844 for the crime of sheep stealing (7 sheep). He was tried in the Bradford Assizes on 4 March 1843 and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. A complete physical description is available from convict records. He was 5' 6" tall and could read and write. His trade was described as; Farm labourer, butcher and shepherd. In Van Diemen's Land he was required to work under the probationary system for 18 months at Jerico, Brown's River and Bridgewater. On 25 August 1845 he was assigned to W Franklin, Oyster Cove for 3 months. He then went to Thomas Jackson, Brown's River on 17 April 1846 for three months. He was at the Prisoners' Barracks, Hobart on 12 December 1848 and the to W Dove, Barrack Street. On 7 August 1849 he was again at the Prisoners' Barracks then back to Thomas Jackson's, Browns River. It was recorded that he rendered services at a bushfire at Browns river in 1847. He applied on 20 November 1848 for permission to marry Ann Eliza Jackson (daughter of the farmer he worked for no doubt) which was approved. As Ann Jackson was only 15 and 8 months when they married in December 1849, she would have been only 14 years and 7 months when Charles sought permission to marry.
