On January 1, 1850 sailed from Liverpool, England, for America. Arrived in Salt Lake City on August 23, 1852, arrived in Panaca November 1866. Charles Mathews Sr. (1824-1920) was born in South littleton, Worcester, England. His family had resided in Worcestershire for many generations. In 1846 he married Elizabeth Jones (1828-1891) and they became the parents of thirteen children. They joined the LDS Church and eventually immigrated to Utah, arriving in 1852. They settled for a time in Weber County but in 1866 were called to settle in Panaca in what was then southern Utah. The Mathews family became prominent in Panaca and members intermarried with other members of the LDS Church throughout southern Nevada and Utah. Descendants live throughout the west and in other parts of the USA and are particularly prominent in church and community affairs in Nevada.
