Charles Mercer Lindsey (who went by "Mercer" as an adult) married Geraldine Gasway of Longview, Texas in an elopement accompanied by their friends on January 18, 1942 in Shreveport. He had previously joined the Army Air Corps. While stationed in Louisiana, he contracted encephalitis due to a mosquito bite and became paralyzed. He spent a year in a military hospital near Ft. Worth, Texas; he was then cared for by his wife and her mother, Johnny Gasway, and other members of her family in Longview, Texas until his death. He died in September 1947 and is buried in Memory Park cemetery, as is his wife and her family members.
