PHOENIXVILLE, Pa., July 27 - Dr. Charles Detwiler, of Royersford, veterinary surgeon of the Third Brigade, N. G. P., was given a hearning before Magistrate Charles H. Howell, of this place, this afternoon, on a charge of ill treating a horse hired to him by Whitby Brothers, Liverymen, of this town, for use during the recent encampment of the Guard at Mr. Gretna. While the warrant was sworn out by Charles Whitby, the case against Detwiler has been worked up by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who also caused warrants to be issued against officers of Battery C of this place.
Detwiler was held in $300 bail for his appearance at court, and bail was furnished by Amos Gotwals, a local merchant. Magistrate Howell conducted the hearing.
A number of the officers and men of Battery C testified to the rough usage the horse received while in camp. According to the evidence submitted by Lieutenant John A. Williams the horse was in harness day and night while in camp.
"Dr. Detwiler passed us at Reading on the way home, and when I asked his driver what time they left Mt. Gretna he said 5 o'clock Saturday morning. That was about 8 o'clock. That would make the time and distance thirty-seven miles in 3 hours. The mar's back was sore, its mouth in bad condition, and it looked fagged out." Lieutenant Williams' testimony was substantiated by Lieutenant Harry Speakman, Stable Sergeant Carl Weidemeir and Corporal Elmer L. Wilson. The liveryman and others testified to the condition in which the horse was returned.
  Detwiler's Statement
Just before the close of the hearing Dr. Detwiler asked to make a statement, and said?
"I deny all the evidence given here this afternoon. The horse in question was not ill-treated. The statement that I drove to Lebanon once or twice every day is also false. I drove to that city only three times. The horse was stabled at the Bader Mansion, just outside of camp, and I paid a hostler $3.75 for the week for taking care of her. I did not leave Mr. Gretna Saturday morning, but Friday night; then drove to Lebanon and started from there at 4 a.m. Saturday. I drove to Reading, twenty-eight miles away, in four hours and fifteen minutes. I left the team at Reading and don't know what happened after that."
