Notes from the Family history written by Amy Louise Bayer, prbably written in 1979: " The history of my family from 1900 to 1979. ....Charles F. Bayr was a young man during the American Civil War. He originally volunteered for the army but was refused induction. Later in the war, when increased man power was required, he was drafted. He paid for a substitue. (aside: I doubt this, he was just too young) Great-great grandfather Bayer must have been a successful businessman. The home he provided for his family is still standing in Pittsburgh, at the corner of Warrington Ave and Mt. Oliver Street in the Allentown section of the city--a section that overlooks the South Side of Pittsburgh with its once sprawling steelmills. The house which contains well over twenty rooms was converted into an apartment house during the 1950's. Charles F. had a meat packing business and a small butcher shop. The shop was located adjacent to the house and operated as a butcher shop into the 1950's Sometime around 1880 he married a girl much younger than he, Mary Burkley"
