He owned a farm in Jewell Co., Kansas where his first child was born. He lost the farm when the locust wiped out the crops and so he returned to Iowa, where the rest of his children were born. Sometime later the family moved to Idaho, settling in Idaho County and this is where his wife died in1891. He was the father of eight children, seven daughters and one son.His only son Elbert was killed during World War I at Cuist, France. Children of Charles Alexander and Martha Chenoweth are: i. Sarah Elizabeth 'Sally' Alexander, born July 20, 1874 in Jewell Co., Kansas; died March 11, 1936 in Kansas City, Kansas; married Archer Lee, A Doctor ? April 14, 1896.Notes for Archer Lee, A Doctor ?:Archer is said to have been a doctor, or at least that is what this writer was told by his daughter. Recently the writer was told by her mother that this was not the case.ii. Louisa Lillian 'Lilly' Alexander, born February 05, 1876 in Winterset, Madison Co., Iowa; died November 03, 1894 in Cottonwood, Idaho Co., Idaho - buried in same casket w/sister Elma, McKinley Cem. Notes for Louisa Lillian 'Lilly' Alexander:'Lilly' never married, she died of Typhoid malarial fever at a young age.In 1994, Joanne Nettleton Dean, a great niece of 'Lilly' had a headstone made marking the graves of Lilly, Elma and their mother, Martha Chenoweth Alexander.iii. Charlotte Viola 'Lottie' Alexander, born January 18, 1878 in Winterset, Madison Co., Iowa; died September 10, 1964 in Pomeroy, Garfield Co., Washington after a lengthy illness-buried Pomeroy Cem; married Eugene Elmer McPherson November 03, 1895 in Cottonwood, Idaho Co., Idaho.iv. Elbert Alexander, A Twin, born July 20, 1889 in Cottonwood, Idaho Co., Idaho; died October 27, 1918 in Cuist, France.Notes for Elbert Alexander, A Twin:Elbert, twin of Elma was severely wounded in the head during World War I and survived for about a month in a French Hospital. According to Winnifred Elizabeth McPherson Scoles, he lost about half of his head and his surviving as long as he did was nothing short of miraculous, as Elbert was a hemophiliac. Alexander died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. E. McPherson of Pataha. He had been ill for the last year.Mr. Alexander was born September 20, 1848 at Bellevue Iowa, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Alexander. His is survived by four brothers, Marion,Grant, Banks, and John, all living in the east.He joined the Union Army when but 16 years of age and served until the end of the war. He was married to Martha Chenoweth on October 16,1873. To this union were born eight children, two of whom survive. Mrs.Sarah Lee of Kansas City, Kansas, and Mrs. E. E. McPherson of Pataha. Heis also survived by 22 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.His only son lost his life in the world war.The funeral was held Saturday October 24, at 10:30 a. m., the Rev.D. H. Morris, officiating. The pallbearers were W. E. Graham, R. R.Keith, A. G. Farley, W. W. Prouty, Abner Parker, J. G. Miller.The American Legion furnished a military escort to the cemetery and had charge of the services at the grave.
