Bio: Charity Lawson died on November 30, 1891 in her home in Penn Township, Gist Settlement, Ohio. She was born on the Gist Plantation in Virginia between 1790 and 1800. Her owner, Samuel Gist, freed her as well as 300 other of his slaves upon his death in 1815. She married Robert Lawson in Virginia. He brought Charity and their children to the newly plotted Gist Settlement in Highland County, Ohio in 1835. Like most women of the time, Charity settled in domestic duties, raising her children as well as two of her grandchildren.
