She appears as a widow on the 1840 census of Tazewell County, Virginia. In the spring of 1845 she moved to Wisconsin with her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Phillip Howery, and with her grown children. The families traveled from Tazewell County, Virginia via St. Louis, then up the Mississippi and Fever Rivers to Galena, Illinois, then were driven overland to Cross Plains, Wisconsin. They settled in a group of Howery cabins on a road running north and south.
