GRANDMA MCGUIRE DIES AT RARE AGE
Was 108 years of age last April
Had been active up to within a year or so
Funeral will be held Monday.
In the passing away of Mrs. Katherine McGuire at 12:20 o'clock noon Corona loses one of her oldest residents. Mrs. McGuire lived with her son John McGuire at 311 West Sixth Street. "Grandma" as she was familiarly known was 108 years of age on the 5th day of last April. For the past few months she had been in poor health but insisted on being up and around whenever she felt strong enough, and it was only the last few months that she has been compelled to let others wait upon her and it has been only the last week that she was unable to feed herself.
Grandma McGuire was born in Harrison county, Indiana. April 5, 1810. She lived there until she was twelve years of age. The family then moved to Nebraska and in later years they traveled around and made their home in nine different states.
She was married to Mr. A.J. Richardson and of this union there were four children born to them. Two of them are now living and reside in the east. By the second marriage there were five children, and but one of them now living-J.F. McGuire.
She has two sisters and one brother living. She was one of twelve children, there being six boys and six girls.
"Grandma" never went to school in her life, and never learned to write or read. However, she had taught herself how to knit and weave and during her young days made all of her own cloths, as well as knit socks and make quilts for the family. In this she was an artist, as some of the work she turned out, but a few years ago verifies this fact.
Six years ago she made quilts for her four grandsons and two granddaughters and these would have been a credit to any woman who had not reached and passed the century mark.
To live 108 years on this earth requires the strongest kind of a constitution but contrary to the accepted theory that tobacco shortens one's life "Grandma" enjoyed her pipe of tobacco after every meal ever since she was more than a little girl and only during the past few months had she given it up.
The funeral services will be held from Hoover's Chapel, Monday. The hour depends upon the arrival of a grandson who is now stationed in one of Uncle Sam's camps in Arizona.

[NOTE: The old lady lied about her age. She actually was born April 1824 -- 14 years after her claimed birth year. Her father was born in 1797 & her mother in 1805 -- making them aged 13 yrs and 5 yrs in 1810, when Catherine said she was born! She was the oldest child, her parents having been married in the summer of 1823.]
