BRULAND, Casper O. "Cap" passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family December 2, 2000 in Bellingham at the age of 87. Cap, as everyone called him, was born in the Pleasant Valley area of Ferndale, WA, to Robert and Guri (Ormseth) Bruland, April 22, 1913. At the age of six his family moved to Minnesota to help care for his ailing grandparents. The next ten years Cap had many memorable stories to share of his family's stay in Minnesota. In June of 1929, they left the Minnesota winters behind and returned to the 140 acre homestead on the Bay Road in Ferndale. 1933 was a year to remember. Cap and Signe Johnson were married May 27, 1933. They remained happily married for the next 65 years, raising two girls and two boys. They farmed, raising cows, and chickens on 40 acres at the NE corner of Aldergrove and Jackson Road. Cap's days were never idle, because in addition to everything else, he worked as a truck driver for Darigold and Milky Way for over 19 years. A job he really loved. After his retirement in 1973, Cap and Signe were snowbirds for 23 years. Traveling to Arizona and enjoying the warmer winters. He was an active member of Triumph Lutheran Church of Ferndale. Cap was preceded in death by his beloved wife Signe, Easter Sunday, 1999; his younger brother Norman and son-in-law Larry Larson. He is survived by daughter Marilyn Larson of Bellingham; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Margaret of Stanwood; daughter and son-in-law Carol and Lyman Frederick of Cathedral City, CA; son Clifford Bruland of Seattle; eight grandchildren (and spouses), Laurie and Jim McClintock of Everson, Shelli and Rick Caldwell of Bellingham, Kris and Gary Ongarato of Bothell, Kevin Ives of Monroe, Karla and Gar Hill of Ronald, WA, Kimberly and Steve Cvitkovic of Belleview, Norman Bruland of Everett, and Bonnie Davis of Stanwood; two step-grandsons and five step-granddaughters and families; fourteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandsons; one brother and sister-in-law Ralph and Thelma Bruland of Bellingham; sister and brother-in-law Esther and Marvin Holmes of Chula Vista, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Cap was a man of few words, great integrity and a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him.
