Granny Carrie died shortly after the birth of Mary Elizabeth. Lonnie Mae Adcock Thomas raised Mary as her own. Lonnie Mae, known as Mommie, told the following story.
There is a good story about Granny Carrie raising a field of cotton to buy a Model A ford and how she tore the door off the barn learning to drive it. Her husband wouldn't provide gasoline so she sold it.
