Her French civil birth record lists her as "Caroline Engel, natural child of Jacobine Engel" and makes reference to Jacobine's deceased husband Andre Schertz. Please note that per the French civil birth record of Jacobine's last child and the French civil death record of her husband Andre there was a period of several years between the two events. The record is very hard to read but a handwritten document says: "Puis cette famille quitte pour le moulin de Lorentzen où naissent encore André le 8 septembre 1827 et Nicolas le 21 octobre 1829. Le père, André Schertz y meurt le 16 avril 1830, tandis que sa femme Jacobée reçoit encore une fille naturelle Caroline le 17 décembre 1838 à Lorentzen, une partie de la famille, ou tous ?, quitte la France en 1846 pour l’Illinois en Amérique." This states that the family then went to run the mill in Lorentzen where Andre and Nicholas were born. It also state the father Andrew died 16 April 1830 but nonetheless, his wife Jacobina gave birth to a natural infant, Caroline on 17 Dec. 1838. Part of the family or perhaps all of them left France in 1846 to go to Illinois in America.
