Carrie is the biological sister of John Gustav Pauly. They were adopted into two families in the Carver county area according to one report by a descendant. Census evidence is consistent with this: Carrie appears with the John Mann family in the 1860 but not the 1857 census. John Gustav is not shown in the Pauly family until the 1865 census. The Paulys were childless before John Gustave joined the family.
