Obituary from Ellenville Journal, September 19,1902: Mrs. Caroline Eck died suddenly Thursday evening from heart weakness. She was preparing to retire when stricken; a daughter, Mrs Joseph Herman who lives near, noticed the lamp burning, and it being later than usual sent her son over to investigate. Through a window he saw his grandmother sitting on the floor. Mrs Herman went over and found her unconscious. Help quickly summoned was to no avail; she passed quietly away. Mrs. Eck lived at Sholam with her son, Edward, who had come to Lackawack to the store, his mother being left alone for the evening. The deceased was 86 years old. Funeral at the Baptist church, dominie Brown of Napanoch officiating; interment at Yagerville. John and Caroline Eck came from Germany in the early fifties with four children and settled in Sholam where they brought up a large family, of whom the following are living: Joseph, Conrad and Edward of Sholam. Sarah wife of John D Irwin, and Lena, wife of Joseph Herman, both of Sholam; Margaret Barthel of Lackawack; Lewis and Benjamin of Napanoch and John in Pennsylvania; also Gwendoline who was the wife of Gilbert Ellis, and Charles, deceased. There are 62 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren still living and 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren dead, --making a total of 150 children in the three generations.
