Obituary

Died at Whatcom, Monday, October 26, Mrs. Carrie Baber, wife of James M. Baber. Mrs. Baber was the youngest daughter of the late Rev. B. B. Bowman of Kent Co., Mich., and Mary Bowman, now of Deception Pass, Fidalgo Island. She was born at Blair, Waterloo Co., Ontario, August 3, 1849. In 1856 her parents moved to Otterbein University, near Columbus, Ohio, which institution she attended briefly, afterwards graduating from Hillsdale College, Michigan, in 1873. After teaching one year at Grandville, Michigan, she married James M. Baber and removed to Sterling, Illinois, and afterwards to Dunlap, Iowa, where her husband engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1883 they moved to Riverside, California, engaging in raisin and orange culture. At Riverside she suffered an attack of typhoid fever, which developed into consumption. Three months ago she came to Puget Sound to be with her mother, her sisters, and her two brothers, Amos and A. C. Bowman, of Fidalgo Island. From the time of her arrival at Whatcom her decline was rapid. She died on Monday, and was buried Wednesday in Joseph Wolfe's private lot at Whatcom, overlooking Bellingham Bay.
