Swenson Swedish Immigration September 7, 2001 Research Center Ken Blake 2301 Beau Monde Terr #103 Lisle IL 60532-1528 Dear Mr. Blake: This is in response to your research request concerning Carolina Johnson Celander and family. The following sources have been searched: records of First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa IA . Immanuel Lutheran in San Jose CA; St. Paul Lutheran in Oakland CA; Swedish Passenger index database Emihamn 1869-1930 On page 37 of the records of First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa IA, I found John Celander and family listed as member (copies enclosed). John was born 19 Apri11862 in Knared parish in Hallands Ian (county) and Carolina Johnson was born 12 August 1860 In Forslof parish (now spelled Forslov) in Kristianstads Ian (province of Skane). John immigrated to Ottumwa from Skane in 1884. He moved to California at some point, but it does not say when. Carolina immigrated from Forslov to Ottumwa in 1886. Daughter Signe Ethelia was born 21 May 1888 and baptized 10 June 1888 in Ottumwa IA, confirmed 2 June 1903. Son Harold Gilbert was born 19 August 1891, baptized 20 September 1891, and died 18 June 1892. Son Carl Herbert (to confirm his first name I found, his baptism record) was born 6 March 1897 in Ottumwa, baptized 18 April, and died 1 August 1897. Son Gilbert Renhold was born 16 June 1893 in Ottumwa and baptized 30 July. The other families on their page were also from Knared parish. I found John and Carolina with son Gilbert Renhold again on page 91 after they had moved back from San Jose CA in 1906. They had re-joined the church 6 June 1906 and moved away again to Waterloo IA. We have no church records from Waterloo and cannot pursue them there. It does not say when they went there. On page 105 of the same membership book, I found an entry for a Hanna Celander, born 15 July 1867 in Knared parish. Perhaps she is John's younger sister. Also on that page are several other people who were born in Knared. On page 7 of the membership book I found Signe Ethelia Celander listed separately, with the others in her confirmation class. It mentions her moving to California at some point and refers us to her family on page 37. Signe is alone again on page 11 showing the move back from San Jose and the move to Waterloo, possibly on 17 Apri11908. Enclosed are the baptism records of the four children and the funeral records of two of the children. The marriage records for this church did not begin unti11889, so we could not look for John & Carolina's church record. In Emihamn I found Carolina leaving the port of Goteborg on 6 August 1886 with a destination of Ottumwa IA. Her last place of residence was Forslov parish in Kristianstads Ian. Enclosed is a guide to translate the headings and county abbreviations. Enclosed is a guide to translate the headings. On the back of the guide are instructions for finding the names of the ships on which the passenger arrived and left. Searching on contract numbers consecutive to hers, I found that she was nestled in a group of people going to Ottumwa, some are even from Knared parish in Hallands Ian, where her future husband was born. I did not find a woman named Edla with her . I understood that you were more interested in Carolina's information and did not spend a lot of time looking for John. This is the type of information that we are able to provide. I hope that it is sufficient to help you make the connections you wanted. We do not have the records to take you back into Sweden to find out anything about their lives or relatives that stayed there. We therefore recommend that you go to your local Latter-Day Saints Family History Branch Library and order the microfilmed parish records for the parishes we found for you. There are chronologiGal birth records that show the child's first names, the paren first- and last names, and the name of the farm on which they were living. From there you can go to household examination records or husfbrhbrsliingder, which are arranged by farm, not alphabetically. There it lists all of the family members, their dates and places of birth, and tells of any movements within, into, or out of the parish. Those are the most-used types of records. It is possible that there will be a volunteer at your local LDS branch who knows how the Swedish records work. If it does not interest you or you do not have the time to do the research yourself, you might hit someone in Sweden to do the work for you.
