His father died when he was young and he was left to head the family. He was abitious and succesfull. His first venture was a sugar mill and he did very well, but it burned to the ground and he had to start over again. After that he built a nother sugar refinery and acquired a quartz mine and was sole representative of Gold Medal Flour in the North of Brazil.

Don Carlos, de overgrootvader van Marnix Alexander (zie Gen. 4 Nr.: 8) spoke several languages among them Latin. When the Emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro II, came to the north, the representative families of Recife were delegated to entertain him. His hobby was speaking Latin and he was very pleased when he found someone with whom he could converse. At the conclusion of his visit, as a gesture of appriciation, he bestowed the minor title of 'de' upon Don Carlos, so that our last name became 'de Paula Lopes'.
