Carl L. Laughner Carl Lorraine Laughner, 92, of Cabot, formerly of Slippery Rock, passed away Wednesday in the Lund skilled nursing unit of Concordia Ministries. Born July 1, 1917, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Carl L. and Daisy McCall Laughner. In Pittsburgh, he worked as a meat cutter and a plumber's apprentice. A veteran of World War II, Carl served as an armorer with the Army Air Corps in the Pacific theater. He was a member of the Slippery Rock American Legion Post. He studied at Slippery Rock University, the University of Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania State University, earning a Master of Arts in English. From 1949 to 1955, he taught at Herron Hill Junior High School in Pittsburgh. Carl was an English professor at Slippery Rock University from 1955 to 1970, and from 1970 until his retirement in 1978, he was the executive director of the Slippery Rock University Alumni Association. He served as past president of the Debate Association of Pennsylvania Colleges and also was Statistically Best Judge. During his retirement, Carl wrote travel literature, led travel tours, worked for McMullen Travel and continued traveling extensively with his wife, Norma. He also enjoyed woodworking and reading all his life. Carl's extensive public service included serving for many years on the Slippery Rock Borough Council, including a term as president. He also served as a GED counselor. Carl wrote the Lay Speaking Manual for the Butler District of the United Methodist Church. A former member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, Carl served his church as lay leader, Family Life Council member, Sunday school teacher, usher and board member. Carl is survived by his wife, the former Norma Watson, who he married July 16, 1948; a daughter, Wendy Honey; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Amanda Laughner; two grandchildren, Emily and Maxwell; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert B. Dr. Carl Laughner came to Slippery Rock on the G.I. Bill after serving in World War II. He was hired as an assistant professor of English and Speech in 1955, later becoming the Director of Alumni Affairs.
Laughner recollects when all classes were held in Old Main. He talks about coaching the debate team, teaching during the Korean War and hitchhiking to classes from Pittsburgh as a student. Carl and his wife Norma, who also taught at Slippery Rock, established the Carl and Norma Laughner Scholarship.
