Gilboa, OH Gazette May 1980 had obituary reproduction of Charles Gifford Conine, 93, last surviving G.A.R. (civil war) veteran in Blanchard Twsp. of Putnam Co. Born in Licking Co. June 26, 1841. Died Monday before Mar. 19, 1934. His wife died six years earlier, but he was survived by his children Mrs. Charles Bracey of Canada, John Conine of Toledo, Mrs. Ed Nemeyer, Mrs. Woods, and James Conine, all of Gilboa, OH. He was with Co. E 12 Ohio Cavalry Reg. and likely an ancestor of Carl, but I have not yet clarified the parents of this Cloyce. I add it here to assure that it is not lost to furture researchers of this family line. Carl is called Cloyce by family and friends.
A family group sheet completed by Nancy and Margaret Conine provided most of the information shown here. It mentioned that Carl died at Gilboa Grove Quarry. Nancy wrote that "besides Carl Eugene Cloyce, there were other two sisters and another brother (one sister died at age 2)".

Gilboa Youth Shot By Mother In Tiff Over Leaving Home
Carl Conine, 20-year-old farm youth who resides near Gilboa in Putnam-co, was recovering at Memorial hospital Monday from a bullet wound in his left lung. Physicians said his chances for recovery are good.
Sheriff Clinton L. Felkey of Putnam-co was holding Mrs. Bessie Conine, mother of the youth, in the Putnam-co jail without formal charge altho he said she inflicted the wound.
The shooting allegedly followed a declaration by the young man he intended to "leave home" and go to live with Lawrence Oren, a farmer for whom he worked.
The affray occurred shortly after noon Sunday when Conine drove home in company with Miss Margaret Oren, 20, daughter of his employer.
"I'm going to stay at the Oren home for good," Mrs. Conine quoted her son as saying, to which she objected. "Carl became angry and slapped me a couple of times," the mother told Sheriff Felkey, "then I grabbed the revolver which was in the dresser drawer where he was getting his clothes."
After being shot, young Conine ran from the house to his car and drove one mile to a service station, where Andrew Pacey called a physician.
Mrs. Conine, a 51-year-old widow and mother of four children, was badly broken over her sudden act, she told Sheriff Felkey, Monday. Her three other children, Isaac, 26, Cloyce, 24 and Mrs. Fannie Crawfis, 32, had all left home.
She told the officer she lived alone on a 20-acre farm near Gilboa and could not bear to have her youngest son leave her. Her husband had been dead nearly 20 years, she told Felkey.
Altho no charge had been lodged against her, Felkey said a shooting with intent to kill warrant probably would be issued if the youth survives. The wound, Felkey said, was inflicted with a .22 caliber revolver.

Farmer Suicide Victim
OTTAWA - Carl E. Conine, 45, a farmer who lived on Rt. 1, Ottawa, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Putnam County Sheriff Jim Ruhe said today.
Dr. Arthur P. Daniels, Putnam coroner, ruled the death a suicide after he was called to a quarry near Gilboa where Conine was found dead in a car.
Authorities said a nephew, Ronnie Conine, told them he had tried to persuade Conine not to shoot himself. Conine used a .22 caliber revolver.
The victim was born May 15, 1915, in Blanchard Township in Putnam County. He was the son of Alva and Bessie Armbrecht Conine. In 1936, he married Margaret Oren, who survives with a daughter, Nancy, at home; his mother, Mrs. Bessie Conine, Rt. 1, Ottawa; a brother, Isaac, Gilboa and a sister, Mrs. Dale Crawfis, Rt. 1, Ottawa.
A brother and a sister and his father are deceased.
He was a member of the Ottawa Eagles Lodge.
