Third City Traffic Fatality

Dubuquer Found Dead After Auto Hits Tree

A 51-year-old Dubuque man Sunday became the third city traffic fatality, equaling the number of auto deaths recorded in all of 1960. In 1959, there was only one fatality.

Carl J. Casey, 1657 Jackson, was killed instantly early Sunday morning when his car missed the Grandview turnaround, went over the circle parkway and smashed into a tree on the Mt. Carmel Motherhouse property.

The accident was not discovered until 6 am, probably from two to four hours after the accident occurred, according to Medical Examiner Donald J. McFarlane.

Police said no attempt had been made to stop the car and it appeared that Casey might have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The first Dubuque traffic fatality of the year was recorded April 25 when Clifford Anderson, 67, of Bellevue, Ia., died in a two car crash on Kerrigan Rd., just within the city limits.

A Hanover, Ill., woman, Mrs. Charles Kaufman was the second fatality on May 9. She was killed when struck by a car while walking on the sidewalk near Eighth and Locust.

In addition to the Dubuque fatality, two other auto deaths were recorded in Iowa over the weekend, bringing the state-wide total to 355 - 46 more than a year ago on the same date.

Services for Casey, a retail sales manager at Beatrice Foods, will be at 9 am Tuesday at St. Patrick's. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at Behr's Monday.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Holy Name Society, the United Commercial Travelers and of Teamsters and Truck Drivers Local 421.

Born at Placid, Ia., he was the son of the late Robert and Agnes (Connelly) Casey.

He was married on Jan. 4, 1932, to Margaret Barrett at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque.

Surviving are his wife, a daughter; Mrs. Donald (Darlene) Christ, of Dubuque; three sons, Carl J. and Robert, both of Dubuque, and Thomas, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Frank (Leona) Tallman, Mrs. Milton (Helen) Stotesbery, Mrs. Joseph (Lyola) Gord, Mrs. Kenneth (Virginia) Hall, all of Dubuque.
