  3. user:sarahs 15 Nov 2013: When I first started researching and compiling genealogies about 20 years ago, I corresponded with a man who had far more experience than I. I can't remember his name, but I do remember the best piece of knowledge he gave me -- "Early spelling was often whimsical." The surname (and given name) "Kennon" is spelled a variety of ways - Cannon, Canon, Kinon, etc. Early spelling was largely phonetical - so, as we all know, how a name was spelled is often irrelevant.
