    [date unknown].

Late last Saturday night, just at the birth of the Lord's day, the spirit of Calvin G. Lamb, a respected pioneer farmer of Jackson township, passed to its heavenly home. The deceased was the oldest son of John W. and Patsey Lamb, also early settlers of Jackson township, who emigrated to Greene county from Guilford county, North Carolina, when the subject of this sketch was five years of age.

Mr. Lamb entered the land where he died from the government and no other instrument has ever been recorded except the original land patent. The country was all a woodland and he carved his way out to civilization and a happy life. His first labor was to cut cord wood, which he sold to make his first payments to the government.

He was a sturdy, honest man, with firm convictions and fearless of law and man. He was a kind neighbor, a just man and an indulgent father. His life was spent as a Christian, his Bible was his daily guide and the Christian church was his choice of denominations, having joined at Owensburg when twenty-two years old.

He was born Oct. 17, 1831, and was therefore aged eighty years and one month old when called home.

He was married to Martha Ann Gastineau on Dec. 29, 1853, and the children who survive this union are Hiram Lamb, Mrs. Alice McDonald, Mrs. Jossie Jackson and Elmer Lamb, all respected citizens of the neighborhood where their parents spent their lives. The wife and mother died June 6, 1914.

The deceased was a brother of John T. Lamb, who spent many years in Bloomfield and was a partner in the News in the nineties.

Truly the community in which he lived and the county has lost a good man, but his exemplary life is an open book and his strict methods and good conduct will be a benefit to all people for time to come.

The funeral services were conducted at the family home east of Owensburg last Monday morning by Elder Logan Hatfield. Interment in the cemetery south of Owensburg.
