Research Notes

  • Although Gideon 1 states that Callaway Burk died sometime after 1840, the court minutes prove otherwise - he was deceased before 27 Sep 1832 when bond was given on his estate.

Burk was a son of Callaway Burk, who was born in Ireland, of Irish parents, became a farmer in Georgia, and was killed there some time after 1840, while acting as a member of a sheriff's posse, by the Philpot band of outlaws, who made an infamous record in that state. The first Callaway Burk, father of Callaway Burk just mentioned and great-grandfather of Dr. Burk, came quite late in life from Ireland to the United States, where his sons had preceded him, and lived to be a very old, and it is said that at ninety-five he could spring upon a horse's back and ride it all day without great fatigue! ...
