    The 39th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Camp Washburn in Milwaukee and mustered in on June 3, 1864. From Milwaukee the regiment moved to Memphis, Tennessee, between June 13-17, 1864.

    Its services included garrison duty, railroad guard and picket duty around Memphis, as well as the repulse of the Confederate attack on Memphis, August 21, 1864. On September 22, 1864, the regiment mustered out. It lost 31 men during service. Three enlisted men were killed. One officer and 27 enlisted men died from disease.
