BURTON E. SWART, of the town of Oneonta, was born June 19, 1868, in the town in which he now lives. He is a son of Elkanah and Adeline (Couse) Swart, and Elkanah was a son of Peter and Betsy Swart, who owned the farm upon which Burton E. now resides. This farm, which in 1794 belonged to the great-grandfather of Burton E. Swart, had, it is believed, been in the family many years prior to this date, documentary evidence making it probable that it came into their possession sometime between 1777 and 1790. It is located in District No. 10, and contains 111 1/2 acres. It lies on the south bank of the Susquehanna River, and is one of the best adapted to general farming and dairying in the county. Upon this farm Peter Swart and his wife, the grandparents, spent their last days, living to be over sixty years of age. They reared a family of seven children, four sons and three daughters, all of whom are now deceased.
Elkanah Swart purchased the old home farm, buying the interests of the other heirs, and lived upon it during his life. He was married to Adeline Couse, daughter of Erastus D. and Polly Couse, in the village of Oneonta, on the 10th of October, 1866. He was engaged in various occupations, in Oneonta, but most of his time was spent on his farm. He was a successful farmer, and was extensively engaged in dairying. He died September 13, 1889, at the age of forty-eight years and fifteen days, leaving one child, Burton E. Burton E. Swart has three aunts (on his mother's side of the family) living, viz: Mrs. Orrin Youngman, in District No. 5, town of Oneonta; Mrs. Enos Yager, whose husband is a farmer in the town of Oneonta; and Mrs. John Yager, whose husband is also a farmer in the town of Oneonta. Mrs. Adeline Swart resides with her son on the old farm. She is now forty-five years of age.
Mr. Swart has always lived on the farm on which he was born. He attended the Union School in Oneonta, and one term in the Medical Department of the University of the City of New York, obtaining a diploma in operative surgery, and also in the chemical department. He had previously studied medicine two years in Oneonta, under the preceptorship of Dr. Church, but on the death of his father he left college and took charge of the farm. At some future time he expects to finish his medical studies. He now owns the farm and carries on general farming, and also has a first-class dairy. His is one of the best dairy farms in the county, and he has all the appliances for its successful working. At present he has twenty cows, the milk of which he sells in Oneonta.
Mr. Swart was married, January 9, 1890, to Miss Hattie Youngman, who was born in the town of Oneonta, June 3, 1869. She is the daughter of John and Adelia Youngman, who own and live on a farm but a short distance from Mr. Swart's. Mrs. Swart has one sister and two brothers living, the sister being Mrs. Walter H. Hall, residing in Brooklyn, whose husband is organist and choir master of the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York City, also of St. Ann's, Brooklyn. Her brothers are Charles D. and Orrin B. Charles D. married Christina Cook, and resides in Oneonta, and Orrin B. married Lizzie Couse, and also resides in Oneonta.
Mr. Swart has erected substantial and comfortable buildings for his cattle, and also good buildings in connection with his dairy business. Mr. and Mrs. Swart are living in their comfortable home overlooking the village of Oneonta and near the Susquehanna River, enjoying life to the fullest extent. They are both members of the Presbyterian Church; Mr. Swart votes the Republican ticket. They are looked upon everywhere as good and useful members of society.
