Bruce was my hero.He saved me many times and I adored him.I could also beat him up which I did evey so often.We were always together.He would go out with Nig,our dog to get A rabbit for supper.No rabbit,no supper.Nig knew and he always found one somewhere.He would bring it around for Bruce to get A shot at and then I got to carry it home in the bag mother had made for that purpose.It fit around my neck and I loved the warm body next to mine.It never occured to me what we had done.It was survival plain and simple.Bruce was always sickly.I believe he had tuberculosis when he was smaller.He did'nt grow much until he got older.In the one room school house that we attended he had only one other person in his class,A heavy set girl.She was from A Jehova Witness family and sometimes they would come to our house and play their wind up victrolla.She would spend her time chasing Bruce.Finally dad threw them out.At school she would ask for permission to go to the library to study ,with Bruce.She would throw her books out the window and make him go out after them.Then he would have to come in through the door to get back in.I don't believe he ever told on her.However, not because he liked her.
