Facts and Events
Note: (From the 16th to the 20th centuries, nearly all ancestors of theLiens and Kirkebergs lived in Norway's Valdres basin, an area of 2,100square miles in the geographic center of southern Norway through whichslices the 100-mile-long Begna River. Counted among its 16th centuryinhabitants, according to "The Lien-Kirkeberg Families: First ThreeGenerations in America," compiled in 1992 by Stewart C. Yeakel, wasGUTTORM DOLFREN, described as "an old chieftain whose land holdings wereso extensive that all his eyes could behold from the highest mountain topbelonged to him." Lore often reflects an element of unprovable truth, calling on a need for faith. A well-documented man living in the sameperiod, BJORN BJORNSSON EIDAL, had children with the same given names asGuttorm's - - Arnie and Sigrid. Guttorm appears to be a legendary figure;Bjorn, a real person. In any event, the same descendants are attached totheir names. It should be noted that Norway's history is steeped inlegend.) |
