Article about accident:COLLISION AT CREST OF HILL 3 HOSPITALIZED Miss Beulah Schaffer, 43, New Virginia, was killed instantly about 11:15 a.m. Satruday when the car in which she was a passenger collided head-on with a car driven by James Rodney Davidson, 27, also of New Virginia. The accident occurred about 3 1/2 miles north of Osceola on the main county road between Osceola and New Virginia, near the crest of a hill and momenst later, the car in which Miss Schaffer was riding was sideswiped by another car driven by Ervin Richard Taylor, 21, New Virginia. Funeral services were held at the Fremont Methodist church this afternooon and burial was in the Fremont Cemetery. Miss Schaffer, who was born in Clarke County and had spent all of her 43 years in the his county, was riding in a 1956 Ford driven by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Edryn Schaffer, 37, of 2020 Courtland Drive, Des Moines. Mrs. Schaffer and her two daughters who were also riding in the car, are in the Clarke county hospital with serious injuries. Carolyn, 14 suffered a basal skull fracture, a severe contusion of the right eye and multiple lacerations and bruises. Mary Ann Schaffer, seven, sustained a broken arm, and severe lacerations of the right knee and chin in addition to contusions of the mouth and tongue. Another passenger in Mrs. Schaffer's car, Ila McClelland, 16, New Virginia, received minor lacerations to the face and left foot plus contusions of the chest and face, but was released. Davidson had multiple contusions of the face and chest and bruises, but was also released. Taylor was not injured. The Clarke county Sheriff's office and the highway patrol office say that the investigation of the accident is not yet complete. Miss Schaffer was the daughter of Jesse and Eva Hale Schaffer. She was born March 6, 1913, and received her education at Fremont school. She is survived by her mother; two sisters, Elsie and Inez Schaffer; two brothers, Charles of Des Moines and Benjamin, Truro; two sisters-in-law; on brother in law; seven nieces, three nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father and sister Mrs Cecil McClelland. Pallbearers were Dartell (sp) Critz, Edward Thompson, Wesley Fouche, Ray Houston, Herbert Taylor, and Lavere Cook. Arrangements were by the Webster Funeral home.
Beulah Margaret Schaffer, daughter of Jesse and Eva Hale Schaffer, was born in Clarke County, Iowa, March 6, 1913 and departed this life October 20, 1956, at the age of 43 years, 7 months and 11 days. Her entire life was spent in Clarke County. Beulah received her formal education in Fremont No. 3 School in Clarke county. She united with the Fremont Methodist Church near her home Dec. 17, 1933. She had a great interest in the Sunday school and in the work with the young people. she devoted many hours to the interest of the youth in the church. She also helped in conducting services for the regular worship when the minister was not able to be present. She devoted her life to the household tasks and work about the home, and helped care for her mother who has been in poor health for a number of years. She will be sadly missed by her immediate family and by her many neighbors and friends. ........ |
