- ↑ Betsey's death record lists Miles Greenwood and Lucy Bemis as her parents. But her birth precedes their 1782 marriage by about 5 years. Source:Johnson, Edward F. Captain Edward Johnson of Woburn, Massachusetts and Some of His Descendants gives her name as "Betsey (Bemis, or Greenwood?)", not knowing which parent she belonged to, but knowing she was not of this union. Given her name at the time of her marriage as Betsey Whitney, it seems likely she was illegitimate, child of a Mr. Whitney and Lucy Bemis. The Whitney Research Group does not seem to know who the Betsey Whitney who married Abijah Johnson was ([5]). No record of her birth is found in Watertown records, no mention of her in Source:Greenwood, Isaac J. Greenwood Family of Norwich, England, in America, p. 83, nor Source:Bond, Henry. Family Memorials. Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, Including Waltham and Weston (1855).
