Bertie Harry Thumbwood was born on 21st February 1889 and baptised the following month in Multan, in what is now Pakistan. He was the son of George Thumbwood, a private in the 6th Regiment of the British Army, and his wife Eliza Thumbwood, formerly Bastock. By 1901 the family had returned to England, where the census finds them living at Colchester. Bertie has yet to be researched after 1901.
