Facts and Events
BERTHA was a great source of information about some of the Urbana pioneers. Her step-father was DAVID LAUER of Urbana. Bertha lived on a farm about one mile north of Urbana, in the 1960s when "White Creek" visited her. She told the story of John Jacob Lower dying in the original log cabin along State Road 13. He had built a new modern house (at the time) behind his log cabin, but then kept the cabin. Bertha did not know John Jacob, but she knew his widow, Magdalena (Karns) Lower when Bertha was a young girl. Bertha also remembered visits by Sam and Charlie, sons of Nicholas Lower, who would visit from near Chicago. Apparently, there were return visits by the Urbana folks to the Chicago area. It seems most of the Chicago branch, if not all, changed their surname spelling to LAUER, about 20 years after migrating to Chicago. Data about them is in this WeRelate.org website. Bertha showed this compiler a large photograph (unknown date) of David Lauer's mother, Magdalena (Karns) Lower on the front porch of her home, but unfortunately this compiler was unable to get a copy, as promised. Hopefully, the photograph has survived, but no one seems to know what happened to it. --White Creek 16:05, 19 August 2012 (EDT) References
