With some luck, I have managed to find Bertha in the Soltikow (Kreis Schlawe, Pommern) church register (I worked this out from her brother's last place of residence "Lika" as Leikow - Leikow is found in the Nemitz & Soltikow church records. And these are online with the Polish Archives. In the baptism records, we find the birth of Paul Otto Richard SASS to the unmarried BERTHA SASS of Leukow born. 12 Feb 1886 (matches the birth date from his death record in St. Paul, MN) baptised 25 Feb in Soltikow godparents (all of "Leukow"): 1. Arbeitsmann Carl SASS (her brother - my gg grandfather 2. ??? Carl Henning 3. Dienstmadchen Ida KAUTZ (probably a sister to Reinhold Kautz)

appears that she is still not married as of July 1888 - she appears as godparent to twin daughter (Anne Martha Franzisca & Marie Emma Luise) of Ernst Bewersdorff & Albertine Burow of Leukow

An Auguste SASS of Leukow shows up as godparent to another set of twins in Dec 1888 (Emma & Emil of Carl Baerfels & Auguste KUNDE) - possible sister?

Immigrated with husband Reinhold Kautz and father Friedrich Sass in 1892. Lived in Mendota Township, Dakota County during 1890s. Moved to St. Paul - 1222 W. 7th St. by 1915. Paul Zemke Sr. can remember going to visit the Kautz family in St. Paul when he was young. He thinks that Bertha was Carl Sass' only other sibling.
