" Hennie's wife was anything but phlegmatic. Always heard before shewas seen, her speech full of trills, exclamations, and an unrestrainedlaughter. Bertha and Henney drove over to my grandparent's place intheir dark colored coup to play euchre, the game I think of as the poorman's branch. It requires some but not a lot of concentration, so thatthe players are not lost in thought. The players greeted the end ofevery trick with exclamations, with groans or gleeful shrieks, Bertha inthe lead, and rehash to their bids. My undemonstrative grandfatherdescribed Bertha appreciatively as a "live wire". What I remember abouther game is that she let the next row of spades or hearts or diamonds orclubs on the underneath card she used to keep her and her partners score"peep out," as she said, from under the face-down top card in the borderto encourage her score to "grow".
