    born about 1895
died Feb. 11, 1940 in Letcher County, Kentucky at the home of neighbor Mary Ann Combs
cause of death: "probably cancer of gastro-intestinal tract (from investigation)"

  5. Bert was shot by his wife, Jane Combs.

This is not what his death certificate says, and there appears to be no evidence for a wife named Jane Combs. His last (and probably second) wife was Armelda Jent (from whom he was separated at the time of his death). She later married Cecil Combs. (Of course, it is possible that his wife shot him and it was covered up.)
