Married Bertram Brattland 3 July, 1924. "Doc" studied to become a chiropractor after he saw how much his father-in-law Ben had been helped after an accident. Emery was riding on a thrashing maching and wanted to get down. Ben was lifting him down when horses moved and spring jump seat hit him in the back. Chiropractor helped him so he could work again, but he never was able to work as before.

Bernice and Doc moved to Cass Lake. Bernice taught after a year of "normal" school in Ada, MN. She had to drive horses and sled to Ada
