  1. Bernedena Koning, age 81, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born July 24, 1922 in Little Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Christoffer and Tena Schmidt Koning. Her parents had immigrated from Holland in 1919. She attended school through the 8th grade in Little Rock, then the family moved to Estherville, Iowa where she graduated from high school in 1940. Bernedena joined the Marine Corp March 8, 1943 and had her Basic Training in Hunter College in New York. She was sent to Washington D.C. where she served during World War II until she was discharged September 26, 1945. She was one of the first female Marines to serve during the war. She reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. She had attended Dirkinson Secretarial School and was employed as a secretary at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo and Fish & Johnson Insurance. She loved her dogs which were her constant companions. Bernedena died Sunday, February 1, 2004 at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Minnie Perry. Bernedena is survived by her friends. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, Iowa with Pastor Allen Poore-Christensen officiating. Special music was “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Burial in Lynwood Cemetery, Clarksville, Iowa with Military Rites by Clarksville AMVETS Post #30.
