'In 1826 John and Elizabeth Stewart emigrated to Canada from Dunmanys County Cork Ireland. ... There were nine children in their family. The following are the names of the children ... Benjamin age 15 [in 1831] He never married. He died in 1864 at the age of 48'
John Stewart 'died in 1831. ... The sons were the following age at the time of John's death: James 26, Thomas ... 22, William 17, Benjamin 15, John 10.'
'I visited the Academy Hill cemetery in Haldimand Township and photographed the new plaque that Jack was instrumental in having erected to replace the original weathered inscription.'
The plaque says: 'STEWART 1780 John Stewart 1831 1786 wife Elizabeth 1861 1816 son Benjamin 1861'
According to other sources, both Elizabeth and Benjamin died in 1864, not 1861 - apparently, weathering of the original tombstone led to the error in the plaque.
