[edit] Front Page News"At a meeting of the directors of the Farmers and Mechanics -- Citizens National Bank on Tuesday, Benjamin L. Shuff executive vice president and a prominent factor in the organization of the largest national bank in Maryland outside of Baltimore, was elected president to succeed the late Robert E. Delaplaine. Mr. Shuff, who has been active in political, civic and fraternal affairs here in addition to his banking duties, has long been active in the management of the bank and played a prominent part in the merger of the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank and the Citizens National Bank in 1952. Began Career in 1921 like his predecessor, Mr. Shuff became employed at the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank on December 5, 1921 as a messenger and clerk. He has worked his way gradually through the minor and major offices of the institution and is considered a capable executive. His elevation to the presidency makes Mr. Shuff at the 11th president of the 138-year-old institution. He is a past Secretary of Group 2 Maryland Bankers Association; past chairman of that group, a member of the Bank Management Committee of the Maryland Bankers Association, a past member of the Small-business Credit Commission of the American Bankers Association and a past chairman of the Agricultural Committee of the Maryland Bankers Association. Mr. Shuff is a native of near Smithsburg, born May 27, 1901, a son of Mrs. Linnie E. Shuff of Wolfsville. He was the eldest of 10 children, seven of whom are living. He and his wife the former Miss Elizabeth C. Herwig, residing in an apartment here during the winter months and at Braddock Heights in this summer. Graduate of Middleton High School progressively, Mr. Shuff became assistant cashier of the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank on January 21, 1930 and trust officer and assistant cashier on September 22, 1931. On January 14, 1936, he was elected vice president and trust officer and a director on June 27, 1944. He was elected executive vice president on January 13, 1948. He graduated from Middletown high school in 1920 and after entering the banking business took a four-year course in higher accountancy and certified public accounting from International Correspondent School. He is a graduate of American Institute of Banking. He is a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wolfsville. He is a member of the Frederick Rotary Club, the Capitol Hill Club, Washington; Frederick Lodge, No. 684, B. P. O. E., which he served 16 years as treasurer and Secretary; the Maccabees, Red Men, Catoctin Club, Inc., and Loyal Order of Moose. He holds directorships in the Farmers and Mechanics -- Citizens National Bank, Ox Fiber Brush Company, El Dorado Products, Inc., New York; Silver Chamberlin Brush Company, New York; Vindobona, Inc., Braddock Heights; Orjan, Inc., This City; Farmers Home Administration, Baltimore; Price Electric Company, Board of Associates of Hood College, Hospital Aid, Inc. and W. A. Riddell, Inc., of which firms he is also president." S8 References
